Inspiration: De Sève & Goodrich

Peter de Sève and Carter Goodrich's careers seem to have run on a parallel course...almost mirroring each other. Both possess unique humorous styles that have graced the covers of many magazines, particularly the "New Yorker" as well as children's books and recently character design for animated films.

What a great pleasure it's been to finally have Peter De Sève enter into the blogging world to share his thoughts and artwork. Unfortunately Carter Goodrich has not as of yet (any online presence) but I'm hoping that he sees the outpouring of admiration Peter is receiving and realizes there are many of us out here who feel the same way about his work.

Along with the images posted I'm including a link to a hi-res pdf of a 1994 Peter de Sève tutorial that was originally published in Step-by-Step magazine and details his working process.

Inspiration: George Bellows

Bellows is another one of those artists who walked a fine line between caricature and fine art. One only needs to look at the faces in the crowd of his fight scenes and his renditions of New York's lower east side during the early 20th century to see some really great examples of stretching features. I was familiar with "Stag at Sharkey's" but really became introduced to his work when I found a book of his lithographs. He was a member of "The Eight", a group of painters founded by Robert Henri and included John Sloan, Everett Shinn, William Glackens, & George Luks, all well known for their great illustration work as well as their paintings. Labeled the Ashcan School of Art, they depicted the darker, grittier side of American life.

I recall seeing an exhibit of Bellows paintings at the Met and standing in front of "The Cliff Dwellers" taking in all the wonderful detail. Then I moved in for closer inspection and the faces that had all that beautiful detail were just a "sploosh" of paint...I was totally amazed by how he was able to achieve those results with such a loose brush.

Guilty Sketches

Well a bit guilty...since Deb and I returned from a nine day cruise of the Caribbean this week and although I brought two sketch books along with me I never attempted to open either one of them instead chosing to wallow in the sun like a beached walrus, intoxicated on buckets of brewskis and margaritas and watching the tie string on my bathing suit get shorter by the day. So I'm posting some sketches that were laying around just to keep the old blog current in an effort to ease my guilt knowing that some of you guys never miss an opportunity to sketch (even while you're taking the morning shower by most accounts).

For Jan Opdebeeck's Happy Birthday thread on the I.S.C.A. forum. This was fun since it was done without reference (he's a pretty easy subject to capture without it especially since I went a bit "cartoony" with it). I actually had a chance to hear him recite "Howl" when I briefly attended S.V.A. and he was invited as a guest speaker.
